Here’s How to Celebrate National Doughnut Day in Ridgewood

DONUTS

Paczki—aka Polish doughnuts—at Old World Bakery.

Today is National Doughnut Day. While Krispy Kreme and Dunkin’ Donuts are both giving away the treats, this holiday was not started by a corporate chain. It began way back in 1938 when the Salvation Army began commemorating those who served doughnuts to World War I soldiers. This morning I decided to go to Dunkin’ and score a free glazed doughnut. It’s a decision I regret.

If only I lived nearby Old World Bakery in Ridgewood. That’s where whole hog and doughnut enthusiast Tyson Ho snapped this photo of an alluring array of paczki, Polish pre-Lenten doughnuts. I used to think that the fried treats where only available on Fat Thursday (Tłusty Czwartek), the last Thursday prior to Ash Wednesday.  Now that I know different, I have a feeling I’ll be heading to Ridgewood sometime soon. Old World’s paczki aren’t free, but surely they’re way tastier than the glazed I had at Dunkin’ today. To submit your delicious finds to Photo Friday simply tag your Instagram photos with #CMSHUNGRY.
