Today is National Doughnut Day. While Krispy Kreme and Dunkin’ Donuts are both giving away the treats, this holiday was not started by a corporate chain. It began way back in 1938 when the Salvation Army began commemorating those who served doughnuts to World War I soldiers. This morning I decided to go to Dunkin’ and score a free glazed doughnut. It’s a decision I regret.
If only I lived nearby Old World Bakery in Ridgewood. That’s where whole hog and doughnut enthusiast Tyson Ho snapped this photo of an alluring array of paczki, Polish pre-Lenten doughnuts. I used to think that the fried treats where only available on Fat Thursday (Tłusty Czwartek), the last Thursday prior to Ash Wednesday. Now that I know different, I have a feeling I’ll be heading to Ridgewood sometime soon. Old World’s paczki aren’t free, but surely they’re way tastier than the glazed I had at Dunkin’ today.
