“Oh you have to try the mangú,” my good friend Jane said of the Dominican breakfast staple made from mashed plantains. “It’s so good.” I half expected something with a viscous fufu-like texture, so I didn’t share her enthusiasm. I am happy to report that mangú is not only pleasant in texture, it’s tasty too.
At Mangu Grill, a Dominican steam table spot in College Point, the yellowish mash is the centerpiece of a classic Dominican breakfast combo known as los tres golpes, or the “three strikes.” The triple play includes fried salami, two braids of salty fried cheese, and two eggs, and is sure to vanquish your hunger. I shall henceforth think of it as the Dominican breakfast of champions.

And to think I almost missed out on one of the greatest steak experiences in Queens. It all happened like this. I’d been leading an epic Flushing Chinatown food tour all day. By the time 5 p.m. rolled around the last thing on my mind was more food, and then I remembered a couple of friends had invited me to check out Danny’s Steak House in College Point. So, as am I often called upon to do, I reached down and prevailed, and I am glad I did. The warm room in what was once a German restaurant with Sinatra playing in the background proved to be a perfect antidote to the Chinatown’s hustle and bustle. And the steak, perfectly pink with a nice crust was pretty darn good too. I even managed to find some room for a bite or too of cheesecake from neighboring La Cheesecake. It was lighter than air, which a was damn good thing considering how much food I had put away that day!

Spa Castle, a five-story jjimjilbang, or Korean spa, in College Point is one of my favorite places in Queens. The Castle features several saunas of varying temperature, including my two favorites: the mud-walled Loess Soil room, which is a whopping 190 degrees and Iceland, whose frigid interior resembles an undefrosted walk-in freezer. There is of course spa food—grilled salmon, asparagus, fruit, even lasagna—to be had on the same floor as Sauna Valley. I never eat it. That’s because there is a decent Korean cafeteria of sorts on the top floor. And when in Rome, or College Point . . . (more…)
