Enjoy Kurry Qulture’s Samosa Chaat at the World’s Fare

While it’s tempting to think of samosa chaat as an Indian version of loaded nachos, it’s really its own thing as Sonny Solomon the man behind Astoria’s Kurry Qulture, told me over a cup of chai last week.

“It’s a very, very popular street food in North India, but now it’s all over India,” Solomon said. “People love it!” And it’s all over Queens too. At Raja Fast Food, always a stop on my Himalayan Heights food tour Vikh and his crew make a psychedelic supersized version consisting of several of the veggie turnovers showered with all manner of sauces and chutneys.

At Kurry Qulture though the dish is somewhat more restrained, but only because it consists of a single gigantic samsosa. The fried vegetable turnover packed with potato and peas seasoned with whole cumin and coriander is topped with chickpeas, onion, and tomato and then drizzled with a trio of sauces: mint and tamarind chutneys and a spicy yogurt. Finally the whole lot is showered with crunchy bits of sev, a chickpea noodle. The resulting explosion of textures and flavors—cool, crunchy, spicy, sweet, sour, and minty— is as exciting as the diverse food scene of Queens itself.

It’s just one of many international flavors being showcased at the World’s Fare on May 18 and 19. Grab your tickets to this one of a kind event here.
