Cannelle Patisserie Now Open in Long Island City

CANNELLE2

Breakfast of champions via L.I.C. and Brittany.

For seven years French pastry fans have made the pilgrimage to Cannelle Patisserie. There, in the Paris of East Elmhurst, situated in an otherwise unremarkable strip mall, they found cases lined with flaky croissants, praline cream-filled Paris-Brest, and other specialties of owner Jean-Claude Perennou’s native Brittany. Now Perennou has opened a second shop in the heart of Long Island City, practically a macaron’s throw from the East River waterfront.

Even dogs are excited about  Cannelle 2.0.

The shop, which opened last Thursday is a homecoming of sorts for Perennou and his wife and Cannelle GM, Dalie, who live across the street. Seasonality will play more of a role at the new shop, Perennou told me when I stopped by a couple of weeks ago. I’ll be hard pressed to choose between a pumpkin pie and pecan pie for Thanksgiving next month.

Yesterday afternoon things were in full swing at the shop. I’d just come from an Indonesian food festival, but that didn’t deter me from sampling Cannelle’s wares. The croissant was as flaky and buttery as ever. A chocolatey praline crunch was a decadent partner for double espresso. As I alternated between sips of coffee and sweet and savory bites, a Colombian gentleman sat down across from me to enjoy a coco-fraise, a gorgeous looking miniature pink cake flavored with coconut and strawberry.  I must confess that I gave my Paris-Brest to my friends from Ice & Vice, but I am looking forward to another tomorrow morning.
