A Delicious Duo of Dumplings in Elmhurst and Flushing

Golden Shopping Mall’s Tianjin Dumpling House offers ten varieties of steamed dumplings.

Golden Shopping Mall’s Tianjin Dumpling House offers 10 kinds.

Last summer I compiled a list of the Top 7 Dumplings in Queens. The delicious little secret is that it was really, really hard to limit such a list to just seven dumplings. In fact I could devote a whole blog to dumplings in Queens. So today’s edition of Twofer Tuesday is dedicated to two of my latest dumpling discoveries from Queens’ two Chinatowns, Flushing and Elmhurst.

Tianjin Dumpling House is a relatively new outfit on the lower level of Flushing’s Golden Shopping Mall. Among the 10 varieties of dumplings find yáng ròu shuǐ jiǎo, or lamb dumplings with green squash ($5for 12). Create your own dipping sauce by combining soy, black vinegar, and chili oil.

The minced lamb and green squash dumplings have a nice gingery kick. Eating a dozen left me full but not overly so. In fact I almost ordered another round, after all there are a lot of dumplings to try at Tianjin Dumpling House.

Kuichai,or Chinese chive dumplings ($5), are just one of the many prepared foods that line the counter of Tea Cup Cafe, a cute little Thai coffee and dessert spot in Elmhurst. I don’t often see Thai dumplings so I decided to give these pale green packages a try.

The package promised pork, dry shrimp, tofu, and mushroom, but the filling was mostly greens. Delicious healthful greens. The herbaceous dumplings were even better when dipped into the sweet, thick soy sauce. I may never eat my way through all the dumplings in Queens, but I’m willing to try.

  • Dragged some grumbling friends out to Flushing to try the dumplings at Tianjin and ended up being the hero of the day. Thanks for the tip! Also walked away with 50 frozen dumplings for my freezer, which were excellent.
